A bittersweet goodbye.

DAWN

My year as the volunteer Global Blogging Ambassador for Heifer International is officially over (that’s the sound of me sobbing).

schedule  A look back at the numbers makes me feel simultaneously exhilarated and a tiny bit exhausted. I traveled to 14 countries (15 if you count my test run to Uganda in October, 2011), and spent at least 280 hours on airplanes and another 390 hours (but who’s counting??) bouncing around in trucks.

It’s been an unbelievable year … and I’ve got more than 10,000 photos to prove it.listening pig

I’ve written 113 posts and my blog was viewed about 84,000 times by people from 164 countries. Thuli Maya Lama

Along the way I was also voted Volunteer of the Year from the South by the Classy Awards (thanks for voting for me, y’all!!). But my biggest joy was meeting people (and Heifer staffers!) in these developing countries and getting to see their homes, their children, and their farms & animals — and how incredibly hard they work every day.family Ecuador

Thanks a million to Heifer (and especially CEO Pierre Ferrari) for trusting me to convey these incredible stories of inspiration and vision.

Thanks to my husband and family for their unwavering support, and to Michelle B. for her stupendous travel counsel.

And thanks to YOU for coming along on the journey!NEPAL GIRL

Getting girly wit’ it.

Never judge a person until you’ve walked in her shoes.

We interrupt the compelling, sensitive & fascinating tale of Betty in Armenia to bring you this breaking story:

Betty is going to Beverly Hills!

Specifically, to Heifer’s amazing celeb-filled fundraiser this Friday called Beyond Hunger to honor Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson, both longtime donors to and advocates for the poor and hungry. What a great cause!! But let’s be honest…this is also star-gazing at its FINEST!

My fave!!

The evening will be hosted by Diane Lane, as well as Nina Jacobson, producer of “The Hunger Games”; Jane Fonda, Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt and Tracey Ullman, with a live auction and live entertainment by Colbie Caillat. Other stars on the dinner committee include Ed Asner, Ashley Judd, Kirsten Dunst, Mia Farrow, Adrian Grenier, Patricia Heaton and David Hunt. Allison Janney, Anna Lappe, Amy Madigan and Ed Harris, Susan Sarandon and Keisha and Forest Whitaker are also part of the committee.

WOW… so of course you’re thinking: What is Betty going to wear? Those cargo pants and orange sweater that I’ve seen in every single country she’s been to?

Yep, that’s the outfit.

New improved BettyOh, ye of little faith! I actually have been on a three-day sprucing up campaign (yeah, it was like chopping thru a forest) and now have pretty nails and toes, genuine evening bags, awesome shoes, and seriously-considered outfits to wear for EVERY one of my occasions – as I am also going out to California for the fabulous CLASSY Awards, where I am the South Region Finalist for Volunteer of the Year for this blog– whoeeeeee!

Here’s the pile of fabulous clothes I will wear…(and no, I don’t pack like this for my Heifer trips)…And here are the list of the events on tap. Can you match them up?? (ha!!)

  1. Friday 9 am: CLASSY Symposium at the New Children’s Museum, San Diego
  2. Friday 6:30 pm: Heifer’s Beyond Hunger Event at the Montage Hotel, Beverly Hills
  3. Saturday 5 pm: CLASSY Awards Red Carpet & Finalists Announcement, San Diego Civic Theater
  4. Sunday – Los Angeles for an Oglethorpe University Alumni Event and possibly crashing the Emmy Awards

I am SO SO excited!! I promise to tweet and post photos from the above events …but most of all, THANK YOU for voting for me for the Classy Awards and being my ever-supportive, super awesome bloggy friends!!!

(And afterwards, I promise I will get back to the serious, wonderful story of Armenia!)

Good news/Bad news

BIG news, y’all — in the good and (only tiny bit) bad department!

First the good news: I’ve been selected as a Top 5 Finalist for Volunteer of the Year, Southern (Sweet Tea) Division in the 4th Annual CLASSY Awards, from a pool of 2,400 nominations for my work on this blog. The CLASSY Awards is the largest philanthropic awards ceremony in the country, celebrating the greatest charitable achievements by nonprofit organizations, socially conscious businesses, and individuals worldwide. (And yes, you are right: “Stay Classy, San Diego!” was Will Ferrell/Ron Burgundy’s snappy sign-off in Anchorman.) In 2011, nearly 2,000 organizations and volunteers were nominated for a CLASSY Award, and their collective efforts impacted the lives of more than 200,000,000 people in 71 countries worldwide. So that means I’m in very good/intimidating company!

The bad news? I’m obviously going to badger you to vote for me (hence this post) … but the GOOD news is, you only have to vote ONCE. If I’ve already badgered you on facebook, twitter, etc. I apologize profusely .. but this is a really big deal for Heifer and therefore, for all my beautiful Heifer peeps … so I gotta beg you to vote for me by July 26 (that’s this Thursday).

One of my beautiful Heifer peeps.

Click here http://www.stayclassy.org/classy-awards/vote to get to the site and follow the big, wonking (but actually simple) explanation below of how to vote (most important step is the FINAL one to log in to Facebook):

Thank you a million times over … I really appreciate your vote!!
